Currently, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has no quality or safety standards in place regarding the procurement, installation, maintenance, and/or repair of automobile adaptive equipment. This means that any business or individual – regardless of education, training, expertise, or ability – is legally permitted to provide, install, or maintain a disabled veteran’s automobile adaptive equipment. This results in shoddy and unsafe workmanship. To add insult to injury, these incompetent providers are paid with taxpayer dollars over and over again until the job is done right.
H.R. 3471, The Veterans Mobility Safety Act will enforce much-needed standards.
