The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association

Transportation is the key to freedom and NMEDA is the key to quality transportation.

Driving Independence for People with Disabilities

The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) is a non-profit trade association dedicated to expanding opportunities for people with disabilities to safely drive or be transported in vehicles modified with mobility equipment to fit their specific needs. All members work together to improve transportation options for people with disabilities.

Making Mobility Accessible

NMEDA was originally formed as an association of mobility equipment dealers in the state of Florida. In 1989, membership opened up to mobility dealers on a national scale and the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association was established. Our organization promotes and supports individual members engaged in the modification of quality transportation for people with disabilities. Today, we have grown to more than 600 members – including mobility equipment dealers, manufacturers, driver rehabilitation specialists and other mobility industry professionals – with the bulk of our network of mobility experts located in the United States and Canada.

Our ultimate mission is to unify and improve the mobility equipment industry and help people with disabilities lead happy, healthy and more mobile lifestyles through the use of quality wheelchair accessible vehicles.

Mobility Resources for Consumers

NMEDA has developed partnerships with multiple organizations who have an interest in the automotive mobility industry. In return, NMEDA shares our platform and our knowledge in order to educate the public about transportation options for people with disabilities. This list will be growing as NMEDA continues to build new partnerships.

Our Impact on the Mobility Industry

As an association, NMEDA works to establish industry standards on the safety, reliability and accessibility of adaptive mobility equipment and raise awareness of the variety of options available to those living with disabilities. Each NMEDA member is required to adhere to the safety standards of Transport Canada and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and to follow the guidelines set forth by NMEDA. Additionally, all NMEDA dealer members are required to participate in the Quality Assurance Program (QAP).

The Quality Assurance Program is a nationally recognized accreditation program for the mobility equipment industry developed to promote quality, dependability, and safety within the industry. QAP is the only program of this nature developed for the mobility equipment industry and participation ensures mobility equipment installation is consistent with the highest guidelines of professionalism available in the industry.

NMEDA Hall of Fame

In 2011, NMEDA established the Hall of Fame in order to honor those who have contributed so selflessly to establishment and growth of the Automotive Mobility Industry. This did not happen without initiative and leadership from a number of different individuals in all areas of the business. Therefore, we feel it is time to recognize those who have made a significant contribution to supplying freedom and independence to so many special people.
